From December 24, the renovated Khodynka gallery will host a group sketch exhibition "For and against", which will present the works of 15 Russian artists exploring the possibilities of reflecting on the problems of the modern world by means of art.
The exhibition is held within the framework of the "Nature of Binary" project - a series of exhibitions attended by over 80 authors from different parts of the country, as well as their mentors and recognized masters of contemporary art. The project is being implemented with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation within the framework of the All-Russian Forum of Youth Creative Workshops "ART-Workshop XXI".
Real art is designed to find simple answers to complex questions and difficult to answer simple questions. Art is the only space in which the subjective response turns out to be important not only for the respondent.
The life of the surrounding people, society, and the state is the focus of the artist's attention and makes him need to react to the socio-political context. Sometimes artists find in this a source of quick fame and fall out of the "art context". Their work ranges from reporting to political activism, and artistic expression is replaced by political gesture.
The other extreme is an escapist position, in which the artist exists only in the paradigm of his own body or enters into an endless dialogue with the history of art. Of course, it is possible to politicize escapism, to argue that this "silence" is caused by certain social shifts, crises, however, such a conversation will not give anything for understanding and perception of "escapist" art. The artists of the Pros and Cons exhibition are interested in the third way - an attempt to reflect (and sometimes offer a solution) to the problems of the surrounding world, using the methods of art. Authors who in their works react to the world around them, full of contradictions, hopes, disappointments and discoveries, they do not hide from it, but they also do not try to live by its laws. They place the events of this world in the coordinate system of their own creativity and lead the viewer to unexpected, sometimes very accurate, and sometimes absurd answers to the challenges of today. This search for answers is a constant experiment that requires the artist to be flexible and critical of reality. Therefore, the format of a "sketch", "sketch" - that which is subject to change, but which prepares for something more - the most optimal option for the existence of such art. It does not try to generalize the ongoing political changes, but it interferes with them, remaining art. It is an art that speaks about the social in the language of its methods and practices, which wants to be politically active without becoming political activism.
It is very difficult to maintain this balance: it requires the author to be especially delicate in relation to the choice of media. But it is he who endows the reflection of the surrounding problems with the artistic meaning that makes the viewer take into account this subjective point of view and decide: are we "for or against"?
